Living cheap in NYC

Living Cheap and Healthy in NYC
Living in New York City is expensive; rents are astronomical as well as taxes (that keep rising). Staying healthy and maintaining physical fitness can be a special challenge to those living in New York City. But with certain original ideas one can maintain peak physical health as well as financial wellbeing. The struggles that New York City provides can actually serve to provide cheap or free ways to staying healthy.
New York City is a place that thrives with young people, be they college students or young entrepreneurs. The city provides quick access to their work as well as a social scene where they can meet and hang out with their peers. The city is also a thriving bustling place where there is always something happening. There is always some exciting event going on where people can make friends or hang out with old ones and have a grand time. But along with all of this appeal comes an expense and not a small one at that. The New York Times reported in 2008 that the average price for a one bedroom apartment in NYC was $2691.00 and Citi habitat reported that for a one bedroom with a doorman the price can jump to $3462.00 (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/realestate/24cov.html?pagewanted=all). For a young single person that is quite an expense, add food to that as well as electric, gas and heat and the number gets much bigger. If someone wants to join a gym or a yoga class it is nearly impossible to afford. The cost of a yearly membership at a local gym can be anywhere from $300-$500. Add to that if someone wants to eat healthy, eating only organic food or taking regular vitamins and supplements, the cost of these foods are very expensive. How can one maintain a healthy regimen as well as making sure that he/she does not go into debt as well as being able to save up for the future?
Many apartment buildings in New York City are starting to offer fitness centers in the buildings so as to offer services to people who would otherwise not go to the gym or would have to pay huge membership fees. One can make sure to only get an apartment in one of these buildings. One can also use some original ideas. These ideas will not necessarily give him a body builder’s figure, but they will help burn off the extra calories as well as to keep him in shape and quicken his metabolism. In my building I live on the second floor, so I’ve stopped taking the elevator altogether. In my school, I take the stairs to all of my classes whether they are on the seventh or fourth floor. Walking up the stairs is a great way to burn extra calories as well as maintaining cardiovascular health. When one is carrying heavy bags home from the grocery one can do some curls with them, it might be surprising, but it actually helps. Doing chin ups on the door frame, pushups, or stomach crunches in the morning or before the shower can keep a man or woman in shape and active and healthy. All of these ideas are all free of charge. If someone is interested in a little strength training, and has the space for it it’s actually cheaper to buy gym equipment rather than signing up for a membership. I bought a full workout bench on amazon.com for about $100.00, and the weights I bought in the local Sears for about another $100.00. This way I can work out whenever I want, play whatever music I choose, and I don’t even have to leave my house.
Eating healthy is very a important part in living a healthy life, but eating healthy does not mean eating only organic food. Yes, organic food has tremendous health benefits, but it also has a big effect on your wallet. What is wrong with making your own salad by buying some lettuce and chopping up some vegetables? One can also make sure to eat in moderation. Having a doughnut for breakfast every day is not going to be good for one’s calorie count but having one once a week will not do much harm and will be more enjoyable. Keeping a healthy diet is more about eating in moderation that about what one eats. As long as one watches what he/she eats one can be satisfied eating the foods they enjoy without piling on the pounds.
For young people living in New York City struggling with the problem of how to maintain a healthy affordable life the options are clear. They just have to be motivated to put in the work and the effort. Living in NYC can present many opportunities for fitness. There are many tall buildings. How many times a day do we have to move between floors? If we just took some of these opportunities and used them, we can be much healthier with more money in our pockets for that special day for which we are saving up.

Discrimination against Others

Essay
Read the following questions and then write a single essay of between 650 and 850 words that incorporates your response to them. Your essay should include an opening statement, a body (with examples and course content references, footnoted properly as needed), and a conclusion.
Before you begin your essay, restate the questions you are answering.
Compare the governmental policies of any two of the following: Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and South Africa. What are the similarities and differences? Compare one of the two nations that you selected with the policies of the United States toward its indigenous peoples. What are the similarities and differences?
In your opinion, of the three policies that you compared, which was the most progressive and which was the most oppressive? Why?

The governmental policies of Canada toward minorities have shifted a lot in the past. Whenever they felt that it was beneficial for them, they encouraged and discouraged immigration. The native people of their land, the Aboriginal Peoples, have been viewed as a thorn in their side for a very long time. Already in the 1830’s, they were establishing Indian Reserves similar to those in the US and were encouraging tribal members to assimilate.
While Canada has relented somewhat in recent years, such as their granting Quebecois some autonomy, they have generally encouraged assimilation. Canada has many minorities since they have had many immigrants from all over the world. There has been a push for more nationalism and pride in their country, and there have even been instances of the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups targeting minorities.
Another country that has had ongoing problems with minority group – dominant group relations is Brazil. Since Brazil had much more slavery than the US, they consequently have more blacks than the US does. They also hate their indigenous blacks a lot more. Even though it is officially against the law to discriminate, there are still notices in job searches that the employer only wants “Spanish” or “Portuguese” workers – meaning only white employees need apply. There is residential segregation, and their congress has only 7 black members. Whites are seven times more likely to graduate college than black people.
The United States has not behaved much better toward its indigenous people; they have also oppressed and relocated them at whim. However, they are not looked upon with as much scorn as the people of Canada and Brazil, even thought that is only because there is much less of them proportionally. Also, they are a bit more segregated in the US, as most of the Indians live on reservations.
Definitely, Canada has the most progressive policy toward minorities of the three countries compared here. They have even set forward a vote if Quebec should separate itself from the rest of Canada or not, and they have allowed that region to choose its own main language, which is displayed on all the signs there. Brazil, on the other hand, has been the least tolerant toward their indigenous people, and continue to discriminate against them, even if not officially. Recent censuses there have shown that blacks have much lower average incomes than the dominant group.

Ten different things to do with your carbon monoxide detector

There are many different ways to use your carbon monoxide detector. I have taken the liberty and time out of my precious life to describe them here:

1. You can install it in your home and maybe save your life – but that’s boring.

2. You can try to stick t into your little brother’s annoying mouth.

3. You can give it to a blind old man and tell him that it is a Finnish coin worth a lot of money there.

4. You can use 4 of them under your table legs to make it higher.

5. You can put water inside them and stick it into the freezer to make very original ice cubes.

6. You can paste it onto the side of your pocketbook so that people will definitely think twice before stealing it.
Ditto for your car.

7. You can give it to your pessel to eat.

8. You can dress it up to look like a birthday cake, but run out of your friends house before he tries to cut it.

9. You can give it to your future bride as a proposal ring. They are very much in vogue now.

10. You can turn it into a duct tape holder.

11. You can build a case for it out of duct tape.

12. You can put it a 40 volt battery and touch it. You wont stop shaking for a day.

13. You can put it into your enemy food blender and turn it on full blast while he isn’t home. That will make a nice decoration.

14. If you have a small hole in your wall, you can make it bigger and stick the carbon monoxide detector into it. Guaranteed that your landlord will not charge you for that particular hole.

15. You can send it to me in the mail as a way to say that you hate me for this article.

How to get Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Carbon Monoxide detectors can literally save your life. They sense – using an electrochemical sensor – a shortage of oxygen in the air and will sound an alarm if it senses this. A couple of years ago, the New York State government mandated that all apartment building managers be rewuired to install these carbon monoxide detectors in every apartment that they managed and built. This was besides for the smoke alarms already mandated by law. Any tenant can take legal action against any apartment building manager or contractor who fails to abide by these laws and regulations.
These carbon monoxide detectors have also been amufactures in a combination of carbon monoxide and smoke alarm device. This device, made mainly by BRK First Alert, a brand name in Carbon Monoxide Detectors  and carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors, is the same size as the other detectors, and costs less than each piece separately. Many people have bought these in the past and have been very happy with them Contractors have reported to me that they have seen a tenfold increase in recent years of customers wishing to purchase these new carbon monoxide detecotors. They themselves also choose these models over other models, mainly due to their aesthetic properties and price. This has proven very cost effective in recent years.
These carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms work using a couple of different power sources. Some are battery – powered, some are AC (Alternate Current) powered, and some are even plug-in. The plugin carbon monoxide detectors are very popular with many customers, since they are nothing to install. That is, unless you consider plugging a carbon monoxide alarm into a wall outlet to be particularly hard or difficult.
